大崎八幡神社
1607年、京都の豊国神社に倣って伊達政宗が建立。 京都から一流職人を招いて造営した建物には、極彩色の繊細な強国や黒漆に金の飾り金具などが施され、伊達藩の強大さを偲ぶことが出来る。冬には”どんと祭”も開かれる。
Osaki Hachiman Shrine
Built in 1607 Date Masamune, this shrine is a replica of the Hokoku Shrine in Kyoto, First-rate craftsmen were hired from Kyoto to work on this structure, and it contains brightly-colored, intricately carved sculptures and metal fixtures made of black lacquer and gold. The power and authority of the Dates can be seen in the works displayed here. The”Dontosai Festival” is held here in winter.

瑞鳳殿
17世紀前半に建てられた伊達政宗の霊廟。日光東照宮にも比肩する豪華絢爛な桃山様式が特徴。第二次大戦で消失したが、1979年に債権した。資料館を併設し、発掘調査の記録映画も上映されている。
Zuihoden
Built in the latter half of the 17th century to house the remains of members of the Date clan, this mausoleum was built in the splendid style of the Momoyama Period of architecture and resembles the Toshogu Shrine at Nikkko. Destroyed by bombing raids during World War II, it was reconstructed in 1979. A museum stands next to the mausoleum and shows a documentary of the archeological excavaion that was carried out on this site.

金華山
原生林に覆われ野生の猿や鹿が生息する島。暖流の影響で、亜熱帯植物も茂るほど暖かい。日本最古の本格的金鉱つかさどる黄金山神社があり、「三年続けて参拝すると金運が上向く」という言い伝えがある。
Kinkasan Island
Still covered by primeval forests, Kinkasan is inhabited by wild monkeys and deer. Warm sea currents give the island a subtropical climate,. Japan’s oldest shir dedicated to the protection of gold mines is located here and there is a belief that if a person worships at the shrine for three straight years, he will become wealthy and prosperous.

仙台市博物館
宮城の歴史的武将・だ当て政宗。かつてその居城があった仙台城址の一角にある。政宗にかかわる武具や貴重な美術品を中心に、古代から現代に至るまでの宮城の歴史資料・美術工芸品が常時展示されている。
Sendai City Museum
Located on the grounds of the former Sendai Castled, this museum traces the history of Miyagi Prefecture from ancient items to the modern age with an emphasis on Date Masamune, founder of Sendai and the Date clan. Various historical documents and art objects are displayed in the permanent collection.

仙台市・仙台城
仙台は人口約100万人の大都市であり、宮城県だけでなく東北地方全体の行政・経済の中枢年である。その発展は、1600年に伊達政宗が仙台を領有したときから始まる。政宗はまず峡谷と川に挟まれた要害の地・青葉山に豪奢な仙台城を建設。その一方で今日の仙台の原型とも言える美しい城下町づくりに取り組んだ。現在、仙台城の城郭は残っていないが、石垣や復元された隅櫓などにその壮麗さの名残をとどめている。また、青葉山公園からは、政宗の騎馬増とともに、彼がその礎を作った美しい町の全容を一望することが出来る。
Sendai Cith/Sendai Castle
With a population of approximately one million, Sendai is the political and economic center of the Tohoku Region. Its development began in the 1600s when Date Masamune first took possession of the surrounding territory. First, Masamune built Sendai Castle on Aobayama, a mountain fortress that overlooked ravines and rivers. St the same that overlooked ravines and rivers. At the same time, he made plans to build a beautiful castle town which incidentally are the vary plans upon which modern Sendai is based. Although the castle itself no longer remains, stone walls and the reconstructed “sumiyagura”(turret)reflect the splendor of the period. From Aobayama park, where and equestrion statue of Date Masamune stands, visitors can get spectacular view of the magnificent city he built.

黒漆五枚胴具足
宮城の英雄、仙台藩祖伊達政宗所要の甲冑。鉄板5枚で構成される「五枚胴」様式の甲冑で、仙台藩で多様されたため「仙台胴」とも言われる。政宗はその武勇とともに相続の美しさという点でも有名。黒ずくめに一点、よろいの全部に金の装飾を用いたjこの甲冑にもその片鱗が伺える。この甲冑は政宗以降歴代藩主に受け継がれた。また伊達家の臣下も代々この型の甲冑を使用した。
Black-Lancquered five-piece armor
This suit of armor was worn by Miyagi’s greatest hero, Date Masamune. Made up of five plates of iron, known as the “Gomaido” style this armor was widely used by members of the Sendai-clan. For this reason, it is occasionally referred to as “Sendai-do”(Sendai armor). Masamune was well known for his valor and the splendor of his attire. The completely black suit of armor is enhanced by single gold ornament placed on the front of the outfit. This armor was passed on from generation to generation of the clan and its retainers also continued to use this style of armor for many generations.

慶長使節ミュージアム
使節団の出向地にほど近い石巻市にあり、支倉常長ら欧州使節団が乗り込んだ洋式帆船サンファン・バウティスタ号も復元建造されている。
Keicho Mission Ship Museum
This museum is located in the city of Ishinomaki, the site closest to where the Keicho Mission set off on its trip to Europe. A replica of the San Juan Bautista, the ship that Hasekura and the other members of the delegation sailed on, is moored next to the main building.

天平ろまん館
金の産地として日本史に名を残す涌谷町にあり、歴史資料や、日本一の自然金塊などを展示する。4月から10月までは、砂金採取体験も出来る。
Tenpyo roman kan
Historical records show that gold was found in the Wakuya region. This museum boasts the largest natural gold nugget found in Japan. From April to October, visitors can pan for their own gold.

塩竈みなとまつり
1000年以上の歴史をもつ塩竈神社と志波彦神社のみこしを乗せた色鮮やかな御座船と百席以上の船団が海上をかける。あでやかで豪快な海の祭り。
Shiogama Port Festival
Over 100 ships carry colorfurl”mikoshi”(portable shrines) from the venerable shrines of Shiogama and Shiwa which are over and a thousand years old. This event is a “gala festival of the seas.”

仙台七夕まつり
古代中国の天体進行に期限を持つ祭り。竹やわし(米を原料とする紙)で作られた色鮮やかな飾りが仙台の中心地を埋め尽くし、さまざまなパレードやイヴェントが3日間にわたって行われる。
Sendai Tanabata Festival
The Sendai Tanabata Festival has its origins in Chinese myth, Colorful streamers and beautiful decorations made from bamboo poles and “washi”(Japanese rice paper) create a festive atmosphere along the main streets of Sendai. Various parades and events are held throughout the three days of the festival.

火伏せの虎舞
宮城県北部の加美町で行なわれる防火祈願の祭り。虎の衣をつけた人々が商店街の屋根で舞い踊る虎舞が最大の見所。他に神輿行列などの催しもあります。
Hibuse to Toramai(Fire-Lion Dance) Festival
This festival, in Kami-machi in Miyagi Prefecture, is held to pray for protection from fires. People dressed as tigers dance on the roofs of the shops in the commercial district.There is also a “mikoshi” parade that winds through the streets.

どんと祭
1月14日の夜、新年を祝った飾り物を神社の一ヶ所に集めて夜通し燃やし続け、新しい年の幸運や商売繁盛を祈ります。裸に日本伝統の薄い下着をつけ、縄で造った飾りを腰に巻き参拝する、”裸参り”という儀式もある。炎が燃えさかり男たちが躍動する、スペクタクルなお祭り。大崎神社が有名だが、同日、県内各地の神社でいっせいに催される。
Dontosai Festival
This event, on the night of January 14, is held to pray for happiness and prosperity in the new Year by gathering the decorations used during the new Year holidays and burning them in a big bonfire. A ceremony called the “Hadaka Mairi”(Naked Pilgrimage) is held where males wear a traditional Japanese loincloth, wrap a decorative rope around their waists, and pray at the shrines. This spectacle of masculine vigor is a sight to behold. Although it is held on the same day at different shrines throughout the prefecture, the most famous is that held at the Osaki Hachiman Shrine.

牛タン
牛の舌の薄切りに塩と胡椒を振り、金網で焼いた仙台発祥の料理。麦飯とテールスープのセットで食べるのが定番。他に味噌漬けやスモークなどで調理する場合もある。
Gyu-tan(beef tongue)
First produced in Sendai, thin slices of “Gyu-tan” are flavored with salt and sesame seeds and cooked over a grill. The best way to eat “gyutan” is with “mugimeshi”(a rice and barley dish) and oxtail soup. Other flavors of gyu-tan include miso and smoked.

笹かまぼこ
数種類の魚のすり身を笹形に固めて焼き上げた宮城の名物。そのまま食べても、焼いたり、大根おろしをあえたり、さまざまな食べ方がある。お酒にもよくあう。
Sasakamaboko(Fish cakes)
One of Miyagi Prefecture’s most popular delicacies, “sasa kamaboko” is made from the paste of several different kinds of fish. It can be eaten in various ways – as is, grilled or combined with granted “daikon” radish. Of course, it also goes well with Japanese sake.

Sendai Dagashi
This traditional hand-made confection is noted for its sweet, simple flavor and its various colors that reflect the different seasons. Everyone from children to adults can enjoy this sweet. Some of the candy shops even date back to the 17th century.

Sake
Miyagi’s sake, made from quality rice, is highly prized for its smooth, mellow flavor. Ice gives the drink a sweetness that masks the strong taste of alcohol. The Sake goes very well with sushi.

ずんだ餅
宮城の名物として全国に知られる「ずんだもち」。良質の米で作った餅に、ゆでた枝豆をすりつぶし砂糖と塩を混ぜた緑色の「あん」をかけたもの。
Zunda-mochi
“Zunda-mochi” is a famous sweet of Miyagi. A paste of boiled soybeans that have been mashed and sweetened with sugar, it is spread over rice cakes made from high-quality rice.

こけし
こけしと言えば「宮城」といわれるほどその技巧-丸い頭と円筒の体で通常は花の絵付けがなされている-は、全国的に有名である。絵付けを体験できる施設もある。
Kokeshi
”Kokeshi” refers to wooden dolls with round heads and cylindrical bodies usually painted in floral designs. This term is nearly synonymous with Miyagi, where the most finely-crafted dolls can be found. Visitors can paint their own Kokeshi dolls.

鳴子漆器
17世紀から伝わる鳴子漆器の特徴は、その塗装技術である。素地の木目を生かした「木地呂塗」と、墨流し技法の「竜文塗」がそれ。また現代では、外国への輸出も考慮して、気候風土がことなっても「狂い」が生じないように処理を施している。
Naruko Lacquer
First created in the 17th century, the main feature of Naruko lacquer is in its distinct application of paint. “Kijiro-nuri” and “Ryomon-nuri” are the two special techniques used to bring out the unique features of the wood. With a view toward exporting this lacquerware abroad, new techniques have been developed to prevent warps from forming due to different climates or humidity.

雄勝硯
硯は、書道や水墨画には欠かせない道具。雄勝硯はその機能性に美術品として価値も付加させた、600年の伝統を持つ石工芸品であり、通商大臣より伝統工芸品指定を受けている。
Ogatsu “SUZURI” inkstones
The “suzuri”(inkstone) is an essential tool in calligraphy of “sumie” painting. The Ogatsu “suzuri” is functional as well as beautiful. With a history dating back 600 years, this inkstone has received the Ministry of Trade and Industry Award for excellence.

Sendai “Tansu”
Using a traditional technique of cabinet-making that originated in the Edo Period, The Sendai Tansu is a unique wood product. The wood is painted to bring out the beautiful grain of the zelkova, and the addition of gold fixtures give an air of elegance and grandeur to the finished product. It is highly valued for its function and beauty.

堤焼
300年の伝統を持つ陶工芸品。冬季表面の手ざわりの粗いさ、力強い色づけが大きな特徴。茶道や華道の世界でもその陶器は高い評価を得ている。
Tsutsumi-yaki
This traditional pottery originated about 300 years ago. Its coarse surface and strong colors are its major features. Tsutsumi-yaki is highly valued in the world of the tea ceremony and “ikebana” flower arrangement.
