Mt. Chokai

Kakunodate
The town of Kakunodate flourished as a castle town . The attractive view of the many remaining samurai premises surrounded by black fences and cherry trees gives the town an appearance similar to that of Kyoto and is called “Little Kyoto”.

八幡平、焼山の麓に位置する玉川は東北地方でもっとも大きい温泉のひとつです。98℃の源泉が毎秒9,000ℓ湧き出ています。日本一を誇る湯量です。
Tamagawa Hot Spring
Located at the foot of Mt. Yake in Hachimantai, Tamagawa is one of the largest hot springs in the Tohoku area. It spouts 9,000 liters of hot water per minute at a temperature of 98!, which is the largest volume of all Japanese hot springs.

Kawarage Oyu-taki Waterfall

竿灯まつり
4日間続く竿燈と呼ばれるお祭りは稲穂に見立て提灯を吊り下げた200本の竹竿をかかげます。竿燈は熟練された動きと手の扱いの男たちによるものです。。この勇壮なお祭りは盛り上がっている観客中を進んでいきます。
Kanto(Lantern) Festival
Lanterns that symbolize ears of rice are lit and hung on 200 bamboo poles called Kanto during the four day festival. The Kanto poles are skillfully carried and manipulated by men who parade among excited spectators as this heroic festival reaches its peak.

花輪ばやし
太鼓や笛、三味線、鈴で12曲の音楽が演奏されます。絢爛豪華な10台の屋台が街を練り歩きます。花輪ばやしは日本の3大囃子のひとつです。
Hanawa Bayashi
Twelve different pieces of music are performed with taiko drums, flutes, shamisen, and bells. Ten decorated performers who show off their skills and compete with one another. Hanawa Bayashi is one of the three major music festivals in Japan.

Omagari Fireworks
Notable pyrotechnic artists gather from all over Japan on the banks of the Omono River to exhibit their skills. Six hundred thousand people turn out to see the ten thousand fireworks being launched and illuminating the river waters.

七夕絵どうろうまつり
七夕絵どうろは美人画が描かれたさまざまな大きさの何百もの灯籠が艶やかに街を練り歩く300年前からの伝統的なお祭りです。
Tanabata-edoro (Lantern Festival)
Tanabata-edoro is a traditional festival dating back 300 years in which several hundred lanterns of various sized decorated with pictures are gracefully carried around town.

なまはげ柴灯(せど)まつり
雪で覆われた真山神社からほらが鳴り響くとき、赤と青の怒った鬼がたいまつを持って”怠け者はいねえが”と叫びながら山からおりてきます。
Namahage Sedo Festival
When the clam horn roars from the snow-covered grounds of Shinzan Shrine. Red and blue demons carrying flaming torched come running out from the mountains shouting “Woo-Woo”.

火振りかまくら
無病息災、家内安全を祈願するため稲わらで作った俵に火をつけ振り回す。
Hiburi Kamakura (Fire Fetival)
Flaming torched made of straw are thrown around, in order to obtain a good harvest by driving evil spirits out of the rice paddies with the sacred fire.

これは北軍と南軍に分かれて3,000本以上の青竹で打ち合う六郷地区の伝統行事です。
Takeuchi (Battle of Bamboo Pole)
This is an enduring event in which the town of Rokugo is divided into North and South groups and the men fight furiously with over 3,000 bamboo poles.

紙風船あげ
人々は無病息災や五穀豊穣を祈り、美人画と武者絵の描かれた100個以上の大きな紙風船夜空にゆっくりと飛ばします。
Kamifusen-age (Paper Baloon Festival)
Over 100 huge paper balloons decorated with pictures of beautiful women and samurai warriors are lifted slowly into the night sky while people pray for a good harvest and the well-beings of their family.

かまくら
雪を用いて作るかまくらは水祈願に始められました。中では子供たちがもちを焼き, 醗酵させたお米から作られた甘い飲み物”甘酒”を通行人に振舞います。
Kamakura Snow Hut Festival
A Kamakura snow hut is built by hollowing a mound of snow and the god of water is enshrined. Inside the hut, children broil mochi rice cakes and invite in passers-by to drink amazake, a sweet drink made from fermented rice.

きりたんぽ
この地域で生産される最高のお米からつくられるきりたんぽは秋田の最も有名なお料理です。炊き立てのご飯をつぶし、串に巻きつけて炭火で焼いたものです。それはそれは比内地鶏と季節の野菜、きのこと一緒になべにいれます。きりたんぽ鍋はお米やきのこが旬の秋が一番おいしいです。
Kiritampo Stew
Kiritampo. Made of the excellent rice produced in the area, is the most famous dish of Akita. Newly harvested rice is cooked, pasted onto skewers, then cooked over charcoal fire. It is then simmered in a pot in hinai chicken broth along with seasonal vegetables and mushrooms. Kiritampo stew is most popular in autumn when the rice and mushrooms are fresh.

Cherry Bark Crafts (Kaba-zaiku)
Kaba-zaike, a specialty of kakunodate-machi, is designated as a traditional craft of Japan. Products such as tea containers and pencil boxes are made by applying the bark of mountain cherry trees in layers. The gloss of the product increases as it is used.

Kawatsura Kokeshi Dolls
Kawatsura kokeshi dolls are traditional products of Inakawa-machi, a town known as having the most kokeshi doll artisans in Akita. These dolls are very beautiful with their unique heads and designs.
